Bamstroymekhanizatsiya (a member of Natsproektstroy) will create safe conditions for train traffic on the Khtutu – Imbo section of the BAM line between Komsomolsk-on-Amur and Sovetskaya Gavan in the Khabarovsk Krai. The length of re-constructed section is 15 km, and the major scope of earthworks has already been completed here.

The Khtutu – Imbo section is bound by the Sikhote-Alin range and the Tumnin River. Rockfalls and snow avalanches are common here. Once the second track was brought into service, the operators started widening the roadbed towards the slope.

The total volume of earthworks amounted to more than 3 million cubic meters of soil. Two rock cuts are being developed on the section: the first, 173 meters high, will have 12 benches; the second, 125 meters high, will have 11 benches. The width of the benches ranges from 4 to 6 meters. The rock is being broken with hydraulic hammers, as blasting is not permitted in proximity to the tracks in operation.

To protect the track against rockfalls and to stabilize the slopes, nearly 14,000 m² of metal mesh is being installed.

At the foot of the cut, a variety of avalanche and rockfall protection structures is being built. On steep slopes, a cascade of two-meter metal barriers is being installed to hold back the snow cover and prevent it from sliding onto the track.

While modernizing the Eastern Range, Bamstroymekhanizatsiya has also implemented some protective measures on other sections of the Komsomolsk-on-Amur – Sovetskaya Gavan line. As part of the second-track construction, embankments were widened, additional cuts were developed, and structures were installed to prevent avalanches and rockfalls.
