Opened on July 16, 2024, by President Vladimir Putin, the bypass reduced travel time between Moscow and St. Petersburg to 5 hours. Despite the complexity of building 29 engineered structures (6 bridges and 23 overpasses), the Northern Bypass was finished a year ahead of schedule.
The most notable structure is the 738-meter bridge over the Volga River. Built in just two years, it has clearance high enough to accommodate large passenger liners.
With the opening of the M-11 and the upcoming M-12 Moscow-Kazan expressway, a 1,520 km uninterrupted transport corridor will be established, connecting St. Petersburg to Kazan. This new route will eliminate all traffic lights and grade crossings. The future extension of the M-12 to Yekaterinburg will create a seamless, high-speed 2,500 km corridor across western Russia.
