Between 2023 and 2024, NPS laid 970 kilometers of side tracks along the BAM - covering nearly a quarter of the entire route. In August 2024, a record 100 km of new track was laid in one month for Russian Railways (RZD).
Crews work in extreme conditions: permafrost, Arctic winters with temperatures below -50°C, seismic risks, rockfalls, avalanches, and floods, all alongside active rail traffic.
To ensure safety and reliability, a wide range of engineering measures are in place. To protect the tracks, permafrost areas are stabilized with large stones. Polymer membranes are installed for waterproofing, while rocky slopes are reinforced with structural supports.
In March 2025, Russian Transport Minister Roman Starovoyt announced completion of Phase II, with a throughput capacity of 180 million tons. Phase III aims for 210 million tons by 2030 and 270 million tons by 2032.
