This crossing will connect the left and right banks of the Neva River on the longest section without motorway bridges within the city limits between Volodarsky Bridge and Alexander Nevsky Bridge (6.4 km).

The bridge will be integrated into the street and road network through three major interchanges: on Obukhovskaya Defence Avenue, Oktyabrskaya Embankment and at the intersection of Dalnevostochny Avenue with Kollontai Street and Soyuzniy Avenue.

The new structure will facilitate traffic for more than 800,000 people: motorists, public transport passengers and pedestrians.

The bridge span will consist of all-welded box-type arch structures, making it visually light and feathery. The crossing will have six car lanes and two tram lanes, pavements and a cycleway.

The 1.6 kilometre long Big Smolensky Bridge will stand on 10 supports. In the collapsed position, the height of the central part above the water is 15 metres and the width of the navigable span will be 60 metres.
